Dometic RV fridge not cooling: what to check before you replace the cooling unit

A Dometic absorption fridge that is not cooling is usually not “dead.” It is an ammonia/water/hydrogen loop that needs three things at once: a heat source (120 V, propane, or both), a path for that heat to leave the box (lower and upper vents), and gravity (the coach close to level). Miss any one of those and the box warms up even though the display looks fine.

Pull the model and serial off the sticker inside the fresh-food compartment or on the fin cover before you order parts. Dometic’s current manuals live at documents.dometic.com. Procedures vary by RM / DM series and by MES vs AES controls. When this page disagrees with your manual, the manual wins.

Most likely first: the coach is not level enough

Absorption fridges circulate by boiling and condensing, then letting liquid fall. Service literature for this class of fridge treats more than a few degrees off level as a cooling loss, worse in hot weather. Put a small level on the freezer floor (or the coach floor if the freezer plate is known to sit parallel to it) and get it close in both directions. Give it time. These boxes often need several hours on a heat source before the fins are cold. Checking after 20 minutes is how people condemn a working unit.

If you just moved the fridge, stood it on its side, or the coach sat unlevel for a long parked stretch, sit it upright and level before you diagnose anything else.

Second: the vents are blocked

The cooling unit on the back of the box has to dump heat outdoors. Typical installs use a lower sidewall service vent and either a roof vent or a second sidewall vent. Look from outside:

  • Remove the lower vent cover. You should see the burner/heater area, absorber coils, and (on many units) a 12 V fan.
  • Clear lint, leaves, wasp nests, and packing leftover from a shop visit.
  • Confirm the fan, if fitted, actually spins when the fridge is calling for cool. A dead fan in 90 °F weather will look exactly like “not cooling.”
  • Do not pack insulation or cargo against the coils.

If you cannot get airflow through that cavity, stop. No amount of thermostat fiddling fixes a boxed-in condenser.

Third: confirm it actually has a heat source

“On” on the panel does not mean heat is reaching the boiler.

On 3-way boxes, test one energy source at a time. A fridge that cools on gas and not on 120 V (or the reverse) is pointing at that heat path, not at “the fridge is junk.”

Fourth: door seal and a stuffed box

A warped gasket or a latch that does not quite catch dumps the cold you paid for. Close the door on a dollar bill; if it slides out with no drag, the seal is lazy. Do not block the interior vents with gallon jugs against the fin wall. Leave space behind the fridge for the exterior cavity — cargo shoved into the outside access is a classic “it worked until we packed for the trip” failure.

Fifth: the thermistor (temperature sensor on the fins)

Dometic mounts a thermistor on the evaporator fins in the freezer. On many models you can slide it up or down a fin; the adjacent sticker is the authority, not a forum post. If someone clipped it to the wrong fin, the board thinks the box is already cold and shuts the heat source off early — warm fresh food, sometimes a frozen mess on one side of the freezer.

Do not guess ohm values from this page. Use the chart in your service manual (model from the sticker → Dometic document search). If you do not have that chart, leave the thermistor where the sticker says and move on.

When it is the cooling unit

Yellow residue on the coils, a sharp ammonia smell at the exterior vent, or a boiler that gets hot while the fins stay at ambient: the sealed ammonia charge is gone or blocked. That is not a recharge at the campsite. Dometic’s path is a cooling-unit replacement or a new refrigerator, done by someone set up for it. Dometic support has dealer/service locator and warranty/repair links. Do not puncture tubes. Do not “add Freon” — this is not a household vapor-compression fridge.

What not to do

  • Do not declare the fridge dead after one short test in 100 °F sun with blocked vents.
  • Do not bypass safety valves on the gas train.
  • Do not order a control board, heating element, and cooling unit in one Amazon cart “to have them on hand.” Get the model sticker, pick one energy source, and follow the manual’s sequence.
  • Do not use this page for compressor / CFX electric coolers. Those are a different machine.

If it still is not cold

  1. Photograph the model sticker.
  2. Note which energy source you tested and for how many hours, ambient temperature, and whether the exterior coils were hot.
  3. Download the manual for that exact model from Dometic, not a random PDF with a similar name.
  4. If the cooling unit is leaking, get a quote for a replacement unit vs a new fridge — labor often decides it.
