Dometic RV Fridge Not Cold but Freezer Is

Dometic RV fridge · Updated August 27, 2026

The freezer is making ice. The fridge is warm. Move perishable food from the fresh-food box to a cooler, then work these checks in order. A cold freezer means the cooling unit and the heat source are doing their job. The fridge-side failure is packing, frost on the fins, gasket, thermostat, or level.

This is for Dometic absorption refrigerators (RM, DM, DMA, NDR, 8-Series). Compressor boxes such as CFX differ.

First, name the symptom

  1. Freezer ice-cold. Fridge warm. Stay on this page.
  2. Both boxes warm, or you smell ammonia. Stop.
  3. Fridge too cold — food frozen under the fins — while the freezer is also cold. Skip packing. Go to thermostat and thermistor.
  4. Display dark, or neither box ever got cold. You do not have this symptom.

Dometic’s later operating manuals treat a fridge that has stopped cooling, or that smells of ammonia, as a shut-it-off-now problem. Turn the unit off at the panel. If you smell ammonia, do not open the doors; air out the coach, evacuate, shut the manual LP valve at the rear, and unplug 120-volt power at the back. Call a Dometic dealer. Do not keep restarting. A cold freezer is the opposite of that failure. Do not condemn the cooling unit yet.

Confirm the cooling unit is working

Most likely cause: It is. Absorption boxes make cold in the freezer first.

Dometic’s RM2652/RM2852 and RM1350 manuals describe the loop: ammonia liquefies in the finned condenser at the top, then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer. Hydrogen evaporates that ammonia and creates the cold. The fresh-food box is cooled at the finned evaporator (the cooling fins). RM1350 and Royale/Elite service tips: a first start may take up to four hours before the cooling unit is fully operational. RUA 8-Series: do not load food for the first four hours; recheck after four to five hours.

On Royale and Elite models, Dometic service tips: after four hours, feel the back plate of the freezer section. Cold to the touch means the unit is working. Those same tips say a double-door box should hold about 43 °F food-storage temperature at 110 °F ambient.

Fix: Do not chase the burner, the AC heater, or a cooling-unit replacement while the freezer is cold. If the freezer later warms, or ammonia appears, shut down.

Overpacked box, blocked fins

Most likely cause: Food is blocking the air path at the cooling fins.

Dometic’s DM/DMA, RM2652/RM2852, and RM1350 manuals all say the coldest positions in the refrigerator are under the cooling fins and at the bottom. The warmer areas are the upper door shelves. Arrange food so air can circulate. Do not overpack: a stuffed refrigerator must work harder and will have higher cabinet temperatures. Service tips: do not cover the shelves with paper or large storage containers. Never put hot food or drinks in — cool them first.

Fix: Pull anything pressed against the fins. Unstuff the box. Close the door and give it hours, not minutes.

Heavy frost on the evaporator fins

Most likely cause: Ice on the fridge fins is acting like insulation. The freezer can still be cold.

Dometic’s DM/DMA and RM1350 troubleshooting for “refrigerator or freezer is not cold enough” lists heavy frost on the evaporator fins. To prevent frost, do not leave the door open longer than necessary. Wipe extra moisture off items before they go in the freezer.

Fix: Defrost. Dometic’s DM/DMA, RM2652/RM2852, and RM1350 procedure: ON/OFF to OFF; empty both boxes; leave the doors open with the drip tray under the finned evaporator. Optional: fill ice trays with hot water and set them in the freezer to speed the melt. When the frost is gone, dry the interior, reload, and turn the unit back on.

Do not use a knife, ice pick, or hot-air blower — Dometic warns sharp tools can leak the ammonia system. RUA 8-Series: no mechanical tools and no hair dryer; defrost the freezer when frost is thicker than 3 mm.

Fridge door gasket

Most likely cause: The fridge door is dumping cold while the freezer door still seals.

Dometic’s “not cold enough” list is: inspect the door gasket; is the door closing properly? Service tips under air leaks: check the gasket on the doors for a positive air seal.

Fix: Look at the fridge-door gasket the full way around — flattened, torn, dirty, or hanging off the channel. Confirm the latch catches. Clean the gasket with warm water only (Dometic: no strong chemicals or abrasives on the gasket or fins). RUA 8-Series flags a door open more than two minutes (error 10).

Thermostat too warm

Most likely cause: The temperature setting is too high for the load and the weather.

Dometic’s first check for “refrigerator or freezer is not cold enough” is the thermostat, if the panel has one. RM1350: settings 1 (warmest) through 5 (coldest). DM2682-family: press the temperature selector until the lamp at the desired setting is lit. Royale/Elite service tips: after a first start, move off COLDEST to about mid-setting. The same thermostat controls gas and electric. Some DM/DMA two-ways (DM2672, DMA4061, DM2872, DMA4081) are factory-preset. Leaving RM2652 on MANUAL can freeze the lower fresh-food section.

Fix: If you have a 1–5 selector, step it colder and wait hours. If food is already freezing under the fins, step it warmer. Factory-preset models: go to the thermistor check below.

Thermistor clip (too cold, or the clip fell off)

Most likely cause (too-cold case): The thermistor is off the fin or not where Dometic clips it.

Dometic DM/DMA: make sure the thermistor bulb and bracket are properly positioned. For “refrigerator is too cold,” clip the thermistor bracket to the last evaporator fin on the right side of the cooling flange, centered vertically on the fin. Seat the bulb in the bracket groove, centered vertically in the bracket. If the clip has slid off, reseat it there.

If the sensor or its circuit has failed, DM/DMA limp mode runs the cooling unit continuously until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset. RM1350 E2: temperature sensor failed; confirm the sensor wire is connected. RUA error 01: thermostat sensor error; cooling continues 45 minutes ON / 15 minutes OFF.

Fix: Reseat the clip as Dometic draws it. Do not guess ohm values. E2 or error 01 that returns is a dealer job.

Coach not level

Most likely cause: The coach has been parked out of level for hours, so liquid ammonia pooled in the evaporator.

Dometic: level the vehicle so it is comfortable to live in — no noticeable sloping of floors or walls. Parked several hours unlevel with the fridge on, liquid ammonia can accumulate in the evaporator tubing, slow or block the hydrogen/ammonia flow, and you lose cooling. Leveling is not critical while you are moving. RUA error 07 (no cooling capacity in gas mode): check whether the device is at an angle, then reset.

Fix: Level the coach so it is comfortable to live in. Leave the fridge on a known-good heat source for hours. If the split remains, check the lower and upper vents for bird or insect nests and spider webs. Dust the coils with a soft-bristled brush if you can reach them.

Error codes

Codes differ by family. Read the data label inside the fridge. Reset with OFF, then ON. RUA 8-Series ERROR-type faults need a 2-to-4-second press of the control knob.

FamilyCodeWhat Dometic saysCampsite next step
RM1350E2Temperature sensor (thermistor) or its circuit failedConfirm the sensor plug is seated. Dealer if it returns.
RM1350E3Overheating thermostat disconnected, or cooling unit overheatedOff. Service.
RUA 8-Series01Thermostat sensor error; cooling continues 45 min ON / 15 min OFFDealer sensor. Do not keep resetting.
RUA 8-Series07No cooling capacity in gas modeLevel the coach. Reset. If it returns — dealer.
RUA 8-Series08 / 09No cooling capacity in AC / DCReset. If it returns — dealer.
RUA 8-Series10Door open more than 2 minutesClose the door. Check the fridge gasket.

CHECK or flashing LP is gas-ignition failure, not this split.

Call a Dometic dealer, or Dometic at 1-800-544-4881, if the fridge stays warm after packing, defrost, gasket, thermostat, and level; if E3 or ammonia appears; or if both boxes go warm. Pull model and serial off the interior data label first.
